SHANGHAI TEN | SHOW | EVENT — Verebes curates AA exhibition & organises symposium

SH10 SHOW | EVENT | FOLIO is a series of events which celebrate the tenth consecutive year of the AA Shanghai Summer School, curated and edited by Tom Verebes, and featuring work by OCEAN CN. SHANGHAI TEN has been curated, edited and hosted in 3 parts, including an exhibition (AAVS SH10 | SHOW), and a symposium event held in Shanghai in July 2016 (AAVS SH10 | EVENT), and this book, AAVS SH10 | FOLIO. SHANGHAI TEN is an opportunity not only to look back, collate, reflect critically, and to disseminate the work of the students, tutors, and visitors in the 10 years of the AAVS Shanghai Summer. SHANGHAI TEN is the product of a multi-contributor collaboration, comprised as the composite aggregation from a large design community. Contributions to this exhibition and book have been selected from the work of 745 students from 44 countries who have joined AAVS Shanghai from 2007-2016; 36 tutors who have taught in the programme; and over 80 visitors to the programme, who have given lectures and presentations, attended AAVS symposia, and toured AAVS students to their built projects, factories and galleries in and around Shanghai. In addition, SHANGHAI TEN | FOLIO also includes essay contributions from a range of expertise in urbanism; transcribed conversations from AAVS symposia in 2015 and 2016. SHANGHAI TEN aims to chart pressing intellectual problematics of this context, their formulations as paradigms related to the conception and design of urbanism, and their associated experimental design approaches and methodologies. This compilation accumulatively and collectively demonstrates the ontological trajectory AAVS Shanghai has targeted, with the objective to harness, mobilise and respond to...

Verebes as Director of 10th consecutive AA Shanghai Summer School 2016

Architectural Association Visiting School Shanghai Hosted at HKU Shanghai Study Centre, Shanghai 建筑联盟学院 访问学校 2016 AA上海暑期工作营 城市特异性 15-23 July 2016 2016年7月15-23日 In an era of unprecedented city building, the 10th consecutive AA Shanghai Summer School will focus on issues related to urbanization in China. The central government of China has recently announced both the Southern China Metropolis (pop. 45 million), and Jing-Jin-Ji Supercity (pop. 130 million). Shanghai, the epicenter of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) metropolitan region (pop. 90m), serves as the programme’s laboratory for the study of the complexities of the contemporary city within this context of massive urbanisation. Given the pervasive legacy of assembly-based repetitive production paradigms, and the monotonous, generic effects of standardization on cities, we will address the question of what makes a city unique. In response, we will delve into design methods by which to shape specific urban characteristics and identities across scales. AAVS Shanghai has persistently championed computational approaches applied to the problematic of the twenty-first century city. As an intensive nine-day studio-based course, AAVS SH will engage experimentally with advanced computational design, to develop a methodological toolbox with which to confront the prevalence of generic, ubiquitous urbanism....

Exhibition: AAVS SH10 SHOW This exhibition, to open concurrently with AAVS Shanghai 2016 in July, aims to curate a retrospective of the design work of past students, current tutors and visitors to the AAVS Shanghai programme. The SHOW addresses design approaches to urbanism within the context of the unprecedented scale and extent of urbanization of China. Book: AAVS SH10 FOLIO Edited in varied formats, this book will probe the multifarious ways in which designers today interact with the complex forces shaping cities in the twenty-first century. The content of AAVS SH10 FOLIO will include student work from AAVS SH, the work of tutors and visitors, essays, interviews and transcribed conversations. Symposium: AAVS SH10 EVENT In each year of AAVS Shanghai, we host a large group of A-list experts, at the top of their game and in the front line of China’s urbanisation. We sit together in an informal public setting, to discuss and debate various contributions to the discourse and matter of the twenty-first century...
